Greetings from the Communications!

Greetings from the Communications!

Unique, modern, innovative, inviting, challenging, attractive, environmentally aware, green, customer-oriented, disabled-friendly. These are adjectives that a head of information would regard as a dream arsenal to continue working with.

For those of us who are engaged in Viking Line’s external communications, this dream came true on December 2, 2010, when it became clear that we would be ordering a newbuilding from the STX shipyard in Turku, Finland. Making this easier was the fact that this would be a unique vessel, distinctive from others around the world. All of the proactive work we had engaged in for years acquired completely new dimensions. Many new opportunities, including exciting challenges, were discernible on the horizon.

Today we are in the midst of this project. So far it has been enjoyable and challenging. We have progressed so far on our journey that two important ceremonies have already been completed: the “cutting of steel” ceremony at the beginning of construction and the keel laying ceremony. The next step will be the launch in August, when the Viking Grace will float!

This past spring we have travelled around and told about the Viking Grace at various events: to begin with, at the largest travel trade fair in the Nordic countries, MATKA in Helsinki; later at the TUR trade show in Gothenburg and at ITB in Berlin. In July we will be on the isle of Gotland during the Almedalen Week.

Many people want to know more about the Viking Grace, and the level of interest among international media has surpassed all expectations. We receive a huge number of questions about the design of the vessel and about liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a fuel alternative. This is undoubtedly due to the heavy interest about the interior design firm of dSign Vertti Kivi & Co and about the new European Union directive on sulphur emissions from marine fuels, which enters into force in 2015.

The www.vikinggrace.com website has been an effective and exciting tool in this communication task, along with the vessel’s own Facebook pages, where people have provided numerous comments. It feels gratifying to be able to involve our customers – both existing and future ones – at an early stage of the project through such interactive communications.

We will continue our efforts to provide information about the fine qualities of the Viking Grace, and we look forward to unveiling its restaurant concepts, entertainment line-up and duty- and tax-free shop, which will also be unique. In January, I hope to see you on board!
