Envisioning and creating M/S Viking Grace

The construction of the new ferry has required a team of skilled professionals. We would like to take this opportunity to introduce two of the people who were part of the team that designed the vessel’s exterior surfaces: Nils-Johan Eriksson and Oskar Lindblom.

With Beginnings in 2008

2008 saw the start of collaborations between Viking Line Abp, Eriksson and Lindblom. The aim was to conceptualize ways of increasing travel comfort in current and future vessels – and also to identify and incorporate the core values that would come to characterize Viking Line Abp as a whole. These ideas have since materialized in a next generation, eco-friendly ferry. Every new groundbreaking project requires innovate thought; many of the original ideas have been implemented. The results can be observed once M/S Viking Grace starts sailing the Baltic Sea.

In November of 2009 Eriksson and Lindblom became consultants for Viking Line. Their creative contribution and work focused on designing inner and outer exterior surfaces. Together with project manager Kari Granberg and technical manager Tony Öhman, Eriksson and Lindblom started planning the areas which first grab one’s attention. To name a few, these spaces include the hull, decks, windows, outdoor public spaces, the LNG-tanks and the bridge.

Successful Outcomes

Eriksson, Lindblom and Viking Line are pleased with the results of their collaboration as well as the opportunity of seeing the project executed in a truly creative way. Envisioning the ferry as not just a vehicle, but also as a complete and multi-faceted cruising experience has required a great deal of courage.
